"Dr Google" saves another child!

Vann's diagnosis

On a family holiday Vann who was daytime toilet trained and was wetting his car seat and wetting his overnight nappy. He had also ditched his drink bottle and was drinking my pump drink bottle of water which is 750ml and he would drink that like it was nothing. Vann was also lethargic but we did a lot of driving, so didn't think twice.

When we returned home my husband was due back at work Sunday. Saturday night it got the better of me I Dr Googled Vann's symptoms and diabetes came up, no way I thought we don't have any family history Dr Google is clearly wrong. Saturday evening Vann vomited and ended up in out bed so I could monitor him, he hadn't vomited since he was on formula. I also at midnight made a doctors appointment for 2pm Sunday.

My husband had gone to work and in the morning Vann was like a floppy bear I got him dressed and he would fall asleep I wasn't happy. I rang my mum and she advised to go to the hospital. The hospital had been hacked and had no internet, I also had to take my 3 year old son in with me but we presented to emergency. Vann was barely awake and very weak it was awful. Bobby his oldest brother was with him the whole time.

I could not get a hold of my husband but mum came and met me at the hospital, she lives over an hour away. How quickly everything changed we were taken in immediately and then moved to a resuscitation room and doctors came in left right and centre.

Vann was in DKA blood glucose level was 21.1 and ketones of 6.9. The doctor made a quick trip to the car and got his phone to hotpsot internet to the laptop and started Vann on fluids and insulin, after looking up doses for his age and weight. Vann had a drip in both arm and looked miserable. The head of Emergency told me I followed my gut well by presenting to hospital if I had of waited until 2pm to the doctors appointment it could of been a lot worse, even fatal.

We stayed in hospital for a week and learned about our new life. Vann was so skinny he had lost weight but being 2 i thought he appeared leaner as he was having a growth spurt. He was a excellent patient and is super strong the nurses told us to trate the hospital as our home, nap when needed etc Vann kept to his routine and was excited to go home. We have been to the hospital a few times since but not for DKA.

A exhausting heart racing experience.
