Misdiagnosed, a common story.
I had gestational diabetes with my third child (aged 33) but could not control it with twice daily insulin despite being tiny and sticking to the suggested diet 100%. He came out absolutely perfect and 6lb.
At my 6 month check up my hba1c was 9.5 but my doctor told me to lose weight. I lost 10kg.
I took my own sugar levels when my son was 18 months and I didn't feel great and they were 13.5. The doctor told me my glucose monitor must be wrong.
I had severe stomach pains and sat in ED one day for 7 hours. They didn't check my sugars.
2 months later there was a day where I lost half of my vision, could not drink enough water and was delirious. I tested myself on the same glucose monitor and I was 23. The ambos came and theirs read the same.
The ED doctor diagnosed me straight away as type 1 and said I was the fittest person in emergency. The hospital endos said I was too old and fat to be type 1. I weighed 60kg
There was a 27 year old man in the cubicle next to me who had just been diagnosed as Type 1 as well. His kidneys were failing and he was off to ICU.
Antibody tests proved T1 LADA...a much slower onset compared to childhood T1. So much misdiagnosis and miseducation. I have a beautiful team looking after me now and an happy to share my story to highlight that T1 is not always the childhood disease we're told it is ❤
