Type1 Superstar ✨Freya✨
Freya was diagnosed at age 1 and is now 14 years old. She wears the Ypsomed Pump and Dexcom G6.
Freya was just selected on the Swimming Queensland youth team for the upcoming Tilly Cup later this month.
It is exceptionally hard to make a Qld Swimming team, as families move to Queensland for the swimming programs here when their kids are around 12 or 13 from across Australia.
The team go to the Gold Coast for 5 days, for training and racing (all funded by Swimming Qld). Not parents!
She is the first person with Type1 diabetes to have ever been selected to compete on a travelling Qld Swim team. The Performance & Pathways Manager told me this today when we were going over what education is required for the team managers.
The 1st photo is from Swimming Queensland State Short Course
Championships. She won 2 Gold and also got 5 other top 10 places
The 2nd photo is the start of her 100m Freestyle from her regional Championships in July, where she broke Olympian Kaylee McKeowns' record from 2015.
I am very proud of her, but also sad how challenging it is to swim at a high level, competitively with Type1 diabetes. I love to see her break down barriers, but wish that these extra barriers were fewer.
